Back-to-School Back Pain: Is Your Child’s Backpack Too Heavy?

Backpacks are part of the daily routine for most students, but once they’re loaded with textbooks, laptops, water bottles, sports gear, and school supplies, they can become surprisingly heavy.

If your child regularly complains about a sore back, neck, or shoulders after school, their backpack could be contributing to the problem.

At Sidney Chiropractic, we care for patients of all ages, including children and teens. As students head back to school here in Sidney, it’s a good time for parents to take a closer look at backpack weight, fit, and everyday habits.

How Heavy Should a Child’s Backpack Be?

A common recommendation from pediatric health organizations is that a child’s backpack should weigh no more than about 10% to 15% of their body weight. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping it at 15% or less.

That means a child who weighs 80 pounds should ideally carry no more than about 12 pounds.

It doesn’t take much to exceed that amount. A laptop, several books, a large water bottle, and other supplies can quickly add up.

Signs a Backpack May Be Too Heavy

Your child’s backpack deserves a closer look if you notice them struggling to put it on or take it off.

Other warning signs can include:

  • Complaints of back, neck, or shoulder pain
  • Leaning forward while carrying the backpack
  • Rounded shoulders or noticeable changes in posture
  • Red marks where the straps sit on the shoulders
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
  • Frequently shifting the backpack because it’s uncomfortable

Pain that continues even after the backpack comes off shouldn’t simply be dismissed as a normal part of going back to school.

Choose the Right Backpack and Wear It Correctly

A good backpack should have two wide, padded shoulder straps and fit close to your child’s body. Encourage your child to use both straps rather than carrying the backpack over one shoulder.

The backpack should sit around the middle of the back rather than hanging low toward the hips. If the bag has waist or chest straps, using them can help distribute the load more evenly.

When packing, place heavier items closer to the back and use the different compartments to keep the weight balanced.

And don’t forget the easiest solution: remove unnecessary items. Cleaning out old papers, books, supplies, and miscellaneous items every week can make a surprisingly big difference.

Back Pain Isn’t Just an Adult Problem

Children and teenagers can experience musculoskeletal pain too.

Long school days may combine heavy backpacks with hours spent sitting at desks, looking down at tablets or laptops, studying, and using phones. Sports and other activities can add additional physical stress.

At Sidney Chiropractic, we provide chiropractic care for children as well as adults. Our approach is tailored to each patient’s age, condition, and individual needs. (sidneychiro.com)

When Should Your Child See a Chiropractor?

If your child’s discomfort disappears after adjusting their backpack and reducing its weight, those simple changes may be enough.

However, if they’re experiencing persistent back or neck pain, recurring headaches, stiffness, limited movement, or discomfort that’s affecting school, sports, sleep, or everyday activities, it may be time for an evaluation.

Our goal is to identify what’s contributing to the problem and determine an appropriate approach based on your child’s needs.

Severe pain, pain following a significant injury, weakness, persistent numbness or tingling, fever, or other unusual symptoms should be evaluated promptly by an appropriate healthcare provider.

Start the School Year With Healthier Habits

Back-to-school season is the perfect opportunity to establish better backpack habits. Check the weight, adjust the straps, encourage your child to use both shoulders, and clean unnecessary items out regularly.

Most importantly, pay attention when your child tells you something hurts.
